Surflay Nanotec GmbH was founded in 2008 by Dr. habil Lars Dähne. The company is located in the Science- and Technology Park Berlin-Adlershof, Germany. Surflay consists of an interdisciplinary team of 13 employees. 12 of whom are scientists and engineers in biology, biotechnology, chemistry, physics as well as pharmaceutical, process and mechanical engineering.
Surflay is focused on the development of intelligent polyelectrolyte surfaces and capsules. The key technology is the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technology, which means the deposition of alternating layers of negatively and positively charged materials on colloidal or planar substrates. Combining physico-chemical functions and biological properties separated by nanometre thick layers allows for the unique modification of surfaces. The areas of application include modern nanoscale filtration materials, substance encapsulation, enzyme immobilisation as well as sensory or diagnostic beads. Our patents and our expertise form the basis for the development of innovative and market-oriented solutions.

Surflay Nanotec GmbH offers a technology-platform for creating new, innovative products applying Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technology. The LbL technology uses the electrostatic interaction of charged polymers, so called polyelectrolytes, on charged surfaces. Our main technological fields are:

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS AND MAIN ADVANTAGES. Surface functionalisation technologies offer a wide application range for product development and optimisation. Combining physico-chemical functions and biological properties separated by nanometre thick layers allows for the unique modification of surfaces. The LbL technology provides materials and products with innovative modified properties. It is a simple, clean technology.
MARKET APPLICATION. LbL technology enables a broad spectrum of possible solutions with multiple approaches. The areas of application include modern nanoscale filtration materials, substance encapsulation, enzyme immobilisation as well as sensory or diagnostic beads. In recent years Surflay has had, and still maintains, ongoing collaborations with industrial partners and universities in the area of biotechnology, in-vitro diagnostics, and cosmetics. Surflay has participated, and continues to participate, in BMBF- and ZIM- as well as EU-funded research activities.

Surflay Nanotec GmbH offers comprehensive experience in the area of surface-modification by means of Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technology and provides a wide spectrum of different and partly biocompatible polyelectrolytes with almost infinite combination possibilities. Furthermore the company has a broad variety of functionalised polyelectrolytes from in-house production.
