Medical communications (MedComms)
We are constantly surprised by the breadth of activities we find ourselves helping to support. There are the usual manuscripts, abstracts, posters, slides and website materials, but also difficult to classify outputs such as looking after a German government minister leading a delegation to the UK or delivering an ambitious communication training programme for healthcare staff across NEC London.
The team at Stgilesmedical have been developing a series of Clinical Study Reports (CSRs) for an orphan drug developed by an interesting UK pharmaceutical company. This agent has now successfully achieved the desired end points in two recently completed Phase 3 studies. We also assisted in the production of a supporting FDA petition, which involved reviewing over 5000 publications. The drug’s novel mechanism of action has the potential to be of value across a range of benign and malignant conditions.
Supporting medical devices
Stgilesmedical is currently supporting a specialist European medical device manufacturer involved in dermal fillers. This is complicated by the arrival of the MedDev 2.7.1 Version 4 guidelines and the new ~330 page Medical Device Directive (MDD. We are likely to see an increase in documentation, research and the need for specialist writers, with some companies deciding to rationalise their portfolio.
Research and development
This is one of our passions at Stgilesmedical and something we often support on a pro bono basis. Recent examples include projects in primary and palliative care, emergency medicine, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate education. In 2016 we developed and delivered a major health event at Imperial College London bringing clinicians and innovators together from pharmaceutical, medical device and digital health industries. Our next large conference will be in 2018 in Berlin.
We are currently talking to one the new UK medical schools regarding delivery of a programme to support their students with job survival skills. It is hoped that this will improve reflection, enhance resilience and promote professionalism. We are particularly proud to be supporting a national charity looking at a range of health initiatives intended to optimise quality of care.
Education for medical writers
Stgilesmedical has been active in developing and delivering the Manchester Metropolitan University MSc in Medical Communications. We have also hosted two of their students on attachment here in London, taken on a medical writing intern from overseas and looked after a digital media apprentice on a 13month attachment.
The team at Stgilesmedical is once again developing educational sessions for the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) conference in January 2018. This follows on from our successful Expert Symposium Session at the European Medical Writer Association (EMWA) meeting in Birmingham. You may have noticed regular articles from our group in the Medical Writing Journal.
